Hello everyone,

We know it has been a while – can you believe it has been two months since this craziness started?

As the state begins to reopen in spite of the urgings of doctors and public health officials across the country, we have gotten many questions about plans to re-open Caliente. In order to avoid confusion, we are putting one answer out there for everyone: we aren’t.

Yes, you read that correctly. We are not reopening.

We have been closed for two months. In that time, the family has had two deaths. Four of the five of us have had to find other jobs to cover rent, bills, etc since Caliente has been closed. And that’s just to cover our personal finances. In order to be able to reopen the restaurant, there would also be a substantial cost that is not covered by that income.

But beyond that, there is the matter of time. We opened Caliente almost eleven years ago in the middle of the worst recession this country had seen in decades. But we were also younger, and the only risk was financial. Now, we are facing both financial and health risks, with no clear idea of when this crisis will end.

I’m not sure many of you realize, but Gus will turn 60 in July and Yaly turned 50 in February. They have been working double-digit days at the restaurant, often six to seven days a week, for ten years. And while Nestor and Meredith are young, they (and you) know they would be kidding themselves if they said Caliente was anything other than the OG parents.

After countless long, painful conversations, we have decided that this is it. It is bittersweet. After all, this has been ten years of our lives. But sometimes, you get a sign that it’s time for change. We think this is ours, and what needs to happen for our family.

So while we will no longer be around as a restaurant, we will still be around as people. As friends and community members. We will still be here for all of you, and look forward to a new chapter of our lives.

From our family to yours,

Muchas gracias

So… You guys are probably tired of seeing my food, but I had to post this one. A family came in today and had all our dishes but 1 and it LOOKED AMAZING! from bottom left up and right pictured are; the ropa vieja meal with maduros, and soup, the fricassee de pollo with tostones, and the Masa de puerco con yuca all accompanied by side salads! #notpicturedisthetayuyos #foodporn #caliente #cuban

Due to the unforeseen circumstances regarding COVID-19, Caliente is going to have to close for the foreseeable future. As always, we will keep you posted via our social media. From our family to yours, we appreciate your continued support and wish everyone the best.

An important update we forgot to add and one bit of good in all of this – with the help of community, we were able to feed dozens of families in the last week. More than anything, we appreciate everyone who made this possible.
